1978 Dodge Warlock

1978 Dodge Warlock A big-block Warlock that was almost vexed into a tow truck. The Warlock seen here is owned by Terry Schmeltzle of Emmaus, Pennsylvania, and is a third-year production version. A couple of years ago, while looking for a Lil Red Truck to serve as a tow vehicle for my Pro Street ‘79 pick-up, I found out about this ‘78 Warlock. It was a far cry from its current appearance, painted Burgundy with the doors badly rusted and the wooden bed floor rotting away. When I opened the hood and saw the 440 engine, I asked the owner who had installed it, not realizing at the time it was a factory available. The owner replied, “Dodge did,” and then showed me the build sheet. At the time, I also had no idea that Dodge had only produced 74 D-150 pick-ups with a 440 under the bonnet that year. While most Warlocks were painted black, this one was Bright Canyon Red. As these things came to light, the plans for this one becoming just a tow vehicle was replaced by a program to restore the rare machine. Ron Delansky of Boyertown, PA whipped the body back into shape. Butch Seibert from Seibert's Garage in Emmaus did the majority of the mechanical work, such as pulling the motor and transmission, re-installing them after they were rebuilt, and using his mechanical genius to restore this truck to a like-new condition. The interior was acquired from Legendary Auto interiors and installed by me with Chuck Sago of the Body Ranch in Emmaus. Chuck also added all the finishing touches that make the appearance of the truck such a show-stopper. . The Warlock truck got special gold wheels measuring 15x7 inches, which I have shod with BFGoodrich rubber on all four corners. So, today, even if I don’t tow my other truck with this Warlock as often as I planned to, you can bet it is still working a spell on cruise night subjects.
